New York in 10-12 gg, con bimbo

Ciao a tutti,
sto pensando di effettuare un viaggio a New York con moglie e bimbo di 6
anni, presumibilmente a luglio, per un periodo di 10-12 giorni.
Per quanto riguarda il volo, ho già individuato giorni e tariffe.
Per quanto riguarda il soggiorno e le cose da fare e vedere, vi chiederei
qualche informazione.

Tenendo conto che il budget a disposizione è un po' limitato...:

Soggiorno: la mia idea iniziale era quella di stare in hotel vicino a Times
Square, ma le cifre lette mi hanno spaventato.
Secondo voi, con bimbo al seguito, ci sono zone di New York "tranquille" e
piu' a buon mercato che vi sentite di consigliarmi ?
Oppure, la sistemazione in appartamento potrebbe essere una alternativa piu'
economica ? Nel caso, avete da consigliarmi un nome o un sito ?

Itinerario: Non so ancora se imposteremo il viaggio prendendo un auto o se
ci limiteremo a muoverci con i mezzi pubblici. L'idea sarebbe quella di
dedicare almeno 5 giorni a New York, poi, per i restanti 5-7 gg., senza fare
tour massacranti, vedere 1 o 2 cose, tipo Niagara Falls. Avete da suggerirmi
qualcosa, qualche meta, qualche itinerario ?

l'obiettivo sarebbe di stare entro i 100 euro a notte (2 adulti ed 1
bambino). Gli hotel in Manhattan, tasse comprese, mi pare stiano tutti oltre
..

Gli hotel a NY sono stracari e strapiccoli, ma non escluderei di
trovare qualche last minute ottimo, per cui continua a cercare.

Ma se il budget e' il tuo problema, io guarderei una sistemazione
temporanea in appartamento qui

comunque, non ti fissare con Times Square.
Se anche prendi un appartamento nell'Upper West Side sei piu' che
connesso con tutto il resto, e vivi piu' l'atmosfera da vera NY. NY in
genere e' tranquilla. Ci ho vissuto 3 anni, sempre nell'UWS e non ho
mai avuto problemi, ne' le mie amiche donne da sole ne hanno mai
avuti.
Per le cose da fare, questa e' una lista compilata nel tempo. la
lascio qui a futura memoria

1. The observatory on the top of the Empire State Building:
Watching the lit up skyscrapers at night literally gives you
butterflies in your stomach.

2. Crossing the Brooklyn Bridge: a 365 degree unobstructed view of
Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens Staten Island, Statue of Liberty and
Governors Island in the misdt of the graceful cables that hold up this
majestic bridge. Truly a view to be hold!!

3. Times Square: You'll feel like an electron in a beam of light.

4. Central Park: A reminder of what this landscape looked like before
the stroke of civilization. Also the way the bedrock protrudes out of
the grass plains reminds us of the foundations that this great city is
built on.

5. Rockefeller Center: Looking up at its majestic tower (GE tower)
from the rink gives you a sense of what larger than life really is.

6. The Metropolitan Museum of Art on Central Park East: An ultra pure
conglomerate of history and culture all under one roof.

7. The Statue of Liberty: Visiting Americas beacon of freedom is a
must for anyone who believes in the American way of life

8. Weehawken, NJ promenade(western side) or Kosciusko Bridge on the
Brooklyn/Queens border (easter side) views of Manhattan: From downtown
to midtown to uptown the way the skyscrapers silhouette gives a visual
definition of the word skyline.

9. Battery Park: Walking among this urban waterfront gives a
surprisingly tranquil experience a midst the various monuments along
the way and beautiful Jersey city views.

10. Coney Island Amusement Parks: The biggest thrill of riding the
cyclone is hearing the 75 year old wood creaking still holding that
sucker up.

here are a couple of suggestions:
-3 hours tour on a boat around the south tip of manhattan: it's a
faboulous experience, specially if you start around 7:30pm so that you
have half in the day and half in the night, with all these amazing
moments of light 'in between' (my favorites: you call them 'entre
chien et loup' in french...beautiful expression no?)- the company is
called circle line (42st & west river shore)
-union square green market (wednesday, saturday until 4pm) a delight
of colors and forms (Deludente per italiani)
-walk along the river on the west side (from charles street level all
the way to south ferry) it as just been renovated, it's fantastic.
again, do it at the end of the day, so you get the sunset...can be
dazzling. and so nyc with all the joggers and dog walkers...
-streets of williamsburg on a sunday morning/afternoon: stoop sales
everywhere (i love the atmosphere)
-brooklyn botanical garden: a little jewel
-the tenement museum: i highly recommend it, it's a great inside on
the immigrants lives in these typical nyc poor family housing of the
turn of the century. (it's in the lower east side, very small, only
with guided tours -i know, it doesn't sound good, but believe me it's
really worth it- it helps to understand and feel the city's history)
-in the west village, a few places to not miss :
have a drink at Chumley's, an old speak-easy (bedford street, around
#86 -hard to find because hidden, like in the old days- but once
you've pushed the door and moved the thick curtain, you discover a
lively place); the charming unknown garden of St Luke church (on
hudson street, around the level of barrow street); porto rico coffee
company (bleecker st, right off sixth ave) just for the wonderful
smell
-take the staten island ferry, on a misty day

here are another few things i would suggest:
-grand central station once it's dark outside: i love train stations,
and this one -just renovated- is quite impressive: stay at a certain
height (a balcony or so) to have a remote view on this incredible
spectacle of endless flow of people in such a huge room. and if you're
lucky, you will assist at a wedding right there, in the middle of the
rushing crowd! (very trendy these days to get married there i heard)
-in my neighborhood, there is a dusty very charming house (the jumel
morris mansion), the oldest on manhattan. not exceptional, but worth
it if you like charming, unexpected, out of touristy path places like
i do. there is an interesting old street facing it, and a few nice
quiet houses around (artists community). a stroll around, specially in
the evening (it is safe don't worry) will have you discover another
part of the city, 99% dominican, poor but very festive, always music
and party, lots of hanging out and chatting on the sidewalk: quite a
street life on broadway!
this city is so segregated, it's hard to believe (and accept)
-if you like minimal art and would enjoy a day outside the city, go to
dia beacon (in the town of Beacon, an hour upstate by train). it's an
old factory converted into a museum. the space is incredible, and very
well adapted to exhibit minimal art pieces. beautiful light there.
-in chelsea still, have a look at chelsea piers (big sport complex on
the river-level of 23street) at night: it is totally surreal: they
have indoors small soccer fields with artificial grass, and (my
favorite) a golf training field on the river surrounded by a net. see
that golf thing at night, you think you're in a dream. (and in front
of it is the brand new frank gehry building, just for you.)
-to stay in the surreal atmosphere, if you walk down from chelsea
piers along the water, you will hit a circus/trapeze school that sets
up its equipment outside and gives classes there in the evening. so
you can sit there and watch these flying bodies on a background of
skyscapers and thousands of small lights! i don't remember at what
level it is, but quite further down from chelsea, half hour walk i
would say
